It happened in a moment — the screech of brakes, the jolt of impact, and suddenly, life shifted. Being in a car accident is something no one prepares for, and even if it's “just a fender bender,” the effects on your body (and your peace of mind) can be lasting.
I want to share my experience — not for sympathy, but in hopes that it helps someone else going through the same thing.
The Pain Didn’t Show Up Right Away
Right after the accident, I was more shaken emotionally than anything. Adrenaline kicked in. I felt stiff, but okay. It wasn’t until the next day — or even a few days later — that the aches, soreness, and tension started to set in.
- My neck was stiff
- My shoulders felt locked up
- I started getting headaches
- Sleep was harder, and I just felt “off”
This is common with whiplash and other soft tissue injuries. They don’t always show up immediately, but they can linger if not treated.
Getting Medical Attention Matters
I did go to the doctor — thankfully. Even though I wasn’t seriously injured, documenting the accident and getting checked out was crucial. It also opened the door to using my Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage through my auto insurance to get the care I needed.
Yes — massage therapy is often covered by PIP if it’s prescribed after an accident. (More on that in a bit.)
How Massage Therapy Helped My Recovery
Once I was cleared by my doctor, I started massage therapy as part of my recovery. Honestly, I didn’t realize just how tense and locked up my muscles were until I was on the table.
Massage helped me:
- Reduce pain and inflammation
- Restore range of motion
- Ease my headaches
- Feel calmer and more grounded
- Sleep better
Soft tissue work was a game-changer, especially for my neck, shoulders, and upper back — the places that took the brunt of the impact.
If You've Been in a Car Accident, Here's What I Recommend:
- Get checked out by a medical professional, even if you feel okay.
- Document everything. You might need it for insurance later.
- Ask about PIP coverage — it can pay for treatment like massage, chiropractic, or physical therapy.
- Start care early — don’t wait for things to get worse.
- Listen to your body. Healing takes time, but early treatment can help prevent chronic issues.
You’re Not Alone — and You Deserve to Heal
Being in a car accident can feel overwhelming, even if it wasn’t “serious.” You don’t have to tough it out or suffer in silence. If you’re feeling sore, anxious, or just off, it’s okay to get help.
Massage therapy is a gentle, supportive way to help your body recover — and in many cases, it’s covered by insurance.
If you’ve recently been in an accident, or know someone who has, reach out. I’d be honored to help support your healing journey.
